The strike of on -board agents declared illegal

In the directive published on Monday, the vice-president of the CCRI, Jennifer Webster, ordered the union and its leaders to end the “illegal strike”.

“The members of the union’s negotiation unit are required to immediately resume their functions and refrain from any illegal strike activity,” wrote Ms. Webster in her decision.

Air Canada online on Saturday, but were ordered to go back to work after the federal employment minister Patty Hajdu had invoked article 107 of the Labor Code to ask the CCRI to submit the two parties to an enforceable arbitration and order the end of pressure means.

However, the Canadian Public Service Syndicate (SCFP), which represents the on -board agents, ignored the decree and challenged the CCRI order before the Federal Court.

The order of Monday fell as the picnors continued to demonstrate in front of the Departures of Terminal 1 from the Pearson International Airport in Toronto, early Monday morning.

Slogans resonated through the sliding doors and in the terminal, where passengers approached Air Canada employees to ask them for spare solutions to their canceled flights.

Air Canada had planned to resume its flights on Sunday, but the union’s decision to continue the strike despite the order of the CCI prevented it. The airline said on Monday that some 500,000 customers had seen their flights canceled accordingly.

“The union movement is united”

This conflict has aroused negative reactions from unions across Canada, which denounce the Liberal government’s decision to have ordered on -board agents to resume work.

A press release from the Canada Labor Congress published at the end of the evening on Sunday evening indicates that “Canadian Union leaders” gathered in emergency session to support Air Canada on -board agents.

The group described the intervention of Minister Hajdu as an “unconstitutional attack on workers’ rights” and said that Canadian unions unanimously demanded from the federal government to withdraw its intervention.

The press release also specifies that the unions are ready to “coordinate a response campaign” and to promote and coordinate financial contributions to help cover legal costs and other linked to the decision of on -board agents to challenge the order of Ms. Hajdu.

“The union movement is united and firm, and we will not allow these rights protected by the charter to be flouted,” read the press release.

Disappointed Carney

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is disappointed that Air Canada and the union representing his on -board agents failed to conclude an agreement after eight months of negotiations.

He urges the two parties to quickly resolve the situation that considerably disrupts the movements of Canadian and international travelers.
