Switzerland should not make concessions in the United States after the taxation of heavy customs duties, according to a survey, although the population expects economic difficulties following the decision of President Donald Trump.
Almost two thirds of those questioned believe that the Confederation should not be put under pressure, even if it means customs duties of 39%, according to a survey published Wednesday by the Yougov Institute. Only a quarter of those questioned judge that Berne should let go of ballast to bring the head of the White House back to better feelings.
According to the survey, two thirds of those questioned think that the economy will suffer from this new deal. Only 5% are of the opinion that there will be no consequences or only minimal damage.
No partisan differences
Half of the people interviewed are also of the opinion that Switzerland should in the future bet more on its own products, although this can lead to an increase in prices in Switzerland. According to Yougov, 41% oppose the Swiss companies to make significant investments in the United States, while 15% of those questioned are favorable.
The survey does not show any partisan differences, contrary to the question on the attitude to adopt with regard to the European Union. Overall, just over half of the survey participants are in favor of increased cooperation with Brussels. Supporters of the UDC, on the other hand, are strongly opposed to such a rapprochement.
The Institute questioned 1,260 people in Switzerland for this survey, carried out from August 5 to 11.
