The threat of espionage is high, worries the intelligence service of the Confederation – RTS.CH

Switzerland faces a triple acceleration of threats: geopolitical, technological and geo-economic, said on Wednesday Christian Dussey, the director of the Confederation Intelligence Service (SRC). “We have never seen such a threat density.”

“Switzerland is directly concerned,” said the director of SRC Christian Dussey before the media. “We are facing fifteen burning themes and are faced with a triple acceleration.”

At the geopolitical level, conflicts degenerate suddenly, technology evolves at dazzling speed and those who cannot follow this arms race are distant or marginalized. And the geo-economic situation can change in a few hours by blocking the delivery channels, said Christian Dussey.

We can see the contours of a world confrontation between, on the one hand, the United States, and on the other, China and Russia on the one hand, notes the SRC. “And Switzerland will not escape it. We are not simple observers,” warned the director of the SRC.

The magnitude of the changes that the American administration could make to the world order is still uncertain. American policy is still contradictory, Note the report.

Switzerland in the sights

As the headquarters of many international organizations and innovation center, Switzerland is in the sights of foreign intelligence services. The threat remains high. Many states have sent personnel of their intelligence services to Switzerland in a hidden manner, especially Russia and China.

These two countries have enough means to spy on other targets than their own diaspora, says the SRC. And to mention federal authorities, police, companies, international organizations, foreign diplomatic representations, journalists, high schools, universities and other research institutes.

Double -use goods

Russia, Iran and North Korea are also trying more and more to obtain double -use goods and technologies for their military and nuclear programs via Switzerland. “The needs are extremely diverse,” said Christian Dussey.

The SRC supports the State Secretariat for the Economy in terms of control of the exports of double -use goods. He examines the supply chains of goods not on the lists in order to prevent large -scale transfers to Russia. It also raises awareness of companies that make products in Switzerland and the products in the products in Switzerland and which is therefore exposed to attempts to acquire.

Terrorist threat always present

The terrorist threat inspired by jihadism against Jewish and Israeli interests is also still raised in Switzerland. However, it is diffuse because the attacks are committed by isolated individuals or small groups of jihadist inspiration which commit acts of violence spontaneously and with simple means.

Police intervened on several occasions as part of the fight against terrorism. Most of the time, young people were at the center of these interventions.

The online radicalization of these young people is a major challenge, early detection is essential, believes the SRC. Radicalization is done faster in young people than adults. For Christian Dussey, “they have greater ideological flexibility”. And the director to specify that “there is no concrete index of attack in Switzerland”.

Several challenges

The SRC faces several challenges that test the resilience of the service: the speed of operations, their growing complexity, the increase in tasks and technological developments. The goal is to make Switzerland a complex and difficult space and to “not be distanced by our opponents”.

And the director to greet the successes of his employees despite increasingly important expectations. Christian Dussey, who still recalled that “it does not burn in the SRC”, will leave his duties in late March 2026.
