The fire broke out on Wednesday around 1:00 p.m. in the Servietto company, which notably produces towels, cups and paper tablecloths.
The firefighters let burns three hangars in a controlled manner and are still deployed on the site to save another warehouse. An adjacent warehouse belonging to a meat processing plant has also been affected and destroyed. The neighboring houses were spared. No victim is to be deplored.
The operation is located in the Vijverwegel in Melle, where several companies are located. The smoke being very dense, the firefighters had recommended keeping doors and windows closed. There is also a question of a presence of asbestos in the roof of the building.
The firefighters continue to extinction the fire. The possible presence of asbestos will have to be the subject of investigations, as is the origin of the disaster. A specialized company has taken samples from the fire. It also takes samples from the adjacent streets. The results will be available on Thursday. Based on these results, the municipality will establish the directives necessary for the continuation of cleaning work. The authorities recommend to avoid touching the particles that have fallen to the ground for the moment

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
