There is a risk of contamination to hepatitis B, C and HIV: a hospital recommends screening tests to more than 4,000 patients from its dental office

These tests are fully supported by health insurance.

A letter was sent to nearly 4 400 patients of Maubeuge hospital center (North), more precisely to those who went to dental office of the establishment during last two years.

The hospital highly recommends that these patients carry out screening tests due to a low risk possible to contamination to hepatitis B, C as well as HIV.

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) revealed, after an inspection, a “Gap in the sterilization of certain instruments used ” within the dental office. This breach could cause a risk of transmission Viruses cited.

Very low risks but not to neglect

However, as specifies here north, this risk only exists if the instruments have been in contact with these viruses. The probabilities remain very low: 0.003 % for HIV, 0.005 % for hepatitis C and 0.3 % for hepatitis B.

The patients concerned are invited to contact their attending physician or the hospital center in order to carry out screening, which will be fully covered by health insurance.
