This very popular savings book will be automatically closed by your bank

From 2026, a massive wave of automatic fences of certain savings accounts will swear in France. Are concerned, the housing savings plans (PEL) opened between 2011 and 2015, which allows millions of French people to access land ownership each year. Considered one of the favorite savings products for consumers, these PELs come to deadline after 15 years of life. We take stock of what you need to know.

What will your money become?

The housing savings plans, which allow to save by benefiting from a guaranteed rate and open the right to a preferential rate mortgage, are not eternal. For PEL subscribed since March 2011, the regulations set a maximum duration of 15 years. After this period, the plan is automatically closed, without prior intervention by the saver. Concretely, from 2026, thousands of PELs will arrive. According to the Banque de France, approximately 36% of PELs are affectedfor 93 billion euros accumulated.

If you are concerned, do not panic: your money will not disappear overnight. The final deadline for the PEL is reflected in two major effects: stopping payments and, above all, an automatic transformation of savings into a conventional savings book, with a significantly lower remuneration rate, and often not guaranteed.

What options facing the end of the PEL?

Faced with this deadline, several alternatives are available to you: it is possible to keep your PEL until its automatic fence. As long as your savings account is active, historical remuneration remains acquired. But it will then be necessary to consider your mutation in a classic booklet. You can also anticipate, and use your right to the loan of savings logically: after at least four years of savings, the PEL allows you to benefit from an advantageous rate loan. It may be the time to seriously think about becoming a owner.

In any case, it becomes urgent to think about other savings products. The planned end of life of PEL opened between 2011 and 2015 marks a key step in regulated savings management, but there are other alternatives to place your money. Do not hesitate to consult your bank directly to find out the booklets and investments it offers. Depending on the amount to spare, and your caution on the financial market, you will inevitably find a football.
