Trade war | Donald Trump announces negotiations with Canada

President Donald Trump announced that he was putting an end to all trade negotiations with Canada and threatened to impose new customs duties because of the digital services tax that would come into force by the end of the month.

Donald Trump said Washington would inform Canada about new customs duties to “do business with the United States” over the next week.

The American president published these comments on his social networks on Friday afternoon, speaking of a “direct and blatant attack against our country”.

Prime Minister Mark Carney had negotiated privately with Donald Trump and announced earlier this month that the two men were trying to conclude an agreement to end the incessant trade war.

This release from Donald Trump occurs a few days before an important deadline that will force large American companies to pay income from the Canadian government.

The digital services tax imposed by Ottawa on large technological companies should apply for the first time on June 30, with retroactive effect over three years, which would leave US 2 billion invoices to pay at the end of the month.
