Donald Trump said on Wednesday that it had reached a trade agreement with South Korea, providing for the application of 15% customs duties to Korean products entering the United States.
“We have reached an agreement on customs duties of 15% for South Korea,” wrote the American president on his social social platform, stressing that Seoul is committed to investing $ 350 billion in the United States. With this agreement, South Korea thus escapes the initial threat of Donald Trump of 25% of surcharge.
The Republican also said that his South Korean counterpart Lee Jae-Myung will go to Washington for bilateral discussions “in the next two weeks”. It will be Lee Jae-Myung’s first visit to the United States since taking office in June.
Donald Trump welcomed that a “significant amount of money” will be invested by South Korea in the United States, with in particular the purchase “per 100 billion dollars” of liquefied natural gas “or other energy sources”.
Since his return to power, Donald Trump has made customs duties the main tool of his economic policy and a major negotiation lever. Dozens of countries are affected by these surcharges which must come into force on August 1ᵉʳ, after repeated breaks.
