Trump claims 1 G $ at the UCLA in the showdown which opposes it to “devastated” universities

The Trump administration seeks to obtain a billion dollars by the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) in its offensive against the American universities he wishes to reform.

This is the latest initiative of the White House aimed at influencing higher education and obtaining significant concessions from American universities, according to information obtained by CNN.

Last week, the Trump administration froze millions of dollars in funding for the UCLA.

In a letter addressed this week to the university community, the rector Julio Frenk said that $ 584 million was “suspended and threatened” and warned of the “devastating” consequences that this could have on the research mission of the public establishment.

According to a source familiar with the file, officials of the prestigious university are now back to the negotiating table and have clearly indicated that they wanted to reach an agreement to restore this funding.

Dialogue proposal

The president of the university, James B. Milliken, responded on Friday afternoon to the proposal of agreement in a press release, declaring that the establishment examined the document of the Ministry of Justice, but qualifying the amount of the regulation of “non-negotiable” and likely to “devastate” the UCLA.

“At the start of the week, we proposed to start a dialogue in good faith with the ministry in order to protect the university and its essential research mission. As a public university, we are the taxpayer resources, and a payment of this magnitude would completely devastate the largest public university system in our country, causing considerable damage to our students and all Californians, “said Mr. Milliken.

The agreement proposed by the Trump administration, sent on Friday to the University and obtained by CNN, requires that this public university pays to the federal government $ 1 billion in several payments, as well as a compensation fund of $ 172 million intended for people who have been victims of violations of the law on civil rights, which prohibits discrimination in employment based on race, skin color, religion, sex or national origin.

If the agreement is accepted, it would constitute the most important regulation ever obtained from a higher education establishment.

In particular, it provides for the establishment of a controller responsible for supervising the university, as well as a new senior executive which will focus on compliance with anti-discrimination laws.

Funding conditions

The proposed agreement prohibits nocturnal demonstrations and asks the UCLA to revise its policies and procedures in this area.

It also requires that the UCLA removes scholarships based on race and ethnic origin, and that it provides data relating to admission to the responsible for monitoring the agreement.

The Entente proposal guarantees non -mixed housing for women on campus and guarantees recognition of female athletes in female sports.

The UCLA hospital and the Faculty of Medicine should also stop providing care related to gender assertions.

In return, university funding would be restored and it would be eligible for future grants and federal contracts.

The Trump administration has targeted the UCLA, as well as other establishments, as part of its fight against alleged anti -Semitism on campuses.

The establishment is currently the subject of an investigation for anti -Semitism conducted by the Ministry of Justice.

In March, the UCLA launched its own initiative to combat anti -Semitism and resolved a trial last week that it has left Jewish students to be targeted during the 2024 Propalestinian demonstrations on campus.
