“There is now an opportunity to put an end to the illegal war of Russia in Ukraine,” said Federal Foreign Minister Anita Anand, after Monday meeting between European leaders, American president Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodyr Zelensky.
Ms. Anand said in a press briefing in Finland that Canada and her allies discuss Stable safety guarantees
for Ukraine since at least the summit of the military alliance of theTake in July 2023.
Last fall, these exchanges evolved and enabled the creation of the Volunteer coalition
a group of countries that has proposed to contribute to the funding or staff provision of a peacekeeping force in Ukrainian territory, including most European countries and other nations, such as Canada, Japan and Australia.
The work that the coalition of volunteers is currently accomplished is absolutely fundamental to adding the structure around security guarantees, in particular the obligations to which each country will have to adhere.
The objective is to help Ukraine to preserve its sovereignty and prevent new Russian incursions, after the annexation of Crimea by Moscow in 2014 had triggered war, followed by the large -scale invasion of February 2022.
The issue of security guarantees occupied an important place on Monday when US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House, a few days after the meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Prime Minister Mark Carney participated Tuesday morning in a virtual call conference with the coalition to discuss Monday’s meeting, according to Canada’s report.
The leaders praised the opening of the United States to offer security guarantees to promote long-term peace and security in Ukraine and Europe
wrote Mr. Carney’s office.
This way of agreeing with the principle that it is not necessary to make any decision concerning Ukraine without Ukraine or any decision concerning Europe without Europe.
Mr. Carney’s spokesperson Audrey Champoux said that Canada is automatically invited to calls for the volunteer coalition as a member
. And this, despite the fact that his calls with the coalition were not published in Mr. Carney’s routes or confirmed in advance in the media.
Ms. Champoux also noted that the absence of Canada in the Friday meeting is explained by the fact that the meeting was reserved for European leaders
.
Fen Hampson, principal teacher of international affairs at Carleton University, said on Monday that the absence remarkable
of Canada was probably due to thespecial aversion
of Mr. Trump for Canada.
No American soldiers in Ukraine
The White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that President Trump would not send American soldiers on the ground, but that the United States was open to security coordination in Ukraine and could provide air support.
Trump said on Monday that he was putting pressure on three talks between Mr. Zelensky, Vladimir Putin and himself. After speaking with the Russian leader later in the day, he finally said that he first organized a face-to-face between MM. Zelensky and Putin, and that talks to three would follow.
This is an idea that emerged during the president’s conversations [Donald Trump] With President Putin, President Zelensky and European leaders yesterday
noted Ms. Leavitt. The Kremlin has not yet indicated if Vladimir Putin had agreed for direct negotiations, but Ms. Leavitt assured on Tuesday that the Russian leader had promised Mr. Trump to meet the Ukrainian leader directly.
