AFPThe shots occurred around 01:30 local while police officers were on incidents, said the assistant chef of police operations Tanya Terry at a press conference.
One of the minor victims was declared dead on the spot. Five injured people were transported to hospital and a sixth went on their own in a medical establishment.
Two of the people injured are minor, said Ms. Terry, without detailing the ages and health of other victims.
“A child died this evening, it is unacceptable,” deplored the police chief of Indiana Chris Bailey, by condemning recurring violence in the city center, involving young people.
He also criticized the parents who allowed “hundreds of not monitored children” to go to town at night.
About twenty people were arrested and firearms recovered from minors, including an assault rifle.
According to Mr. Bailey, several thousand people went to the city center to attend a fireworks when the country celebrated independence. Most left peacefully, but others have “caused troubles”.
Armed violence is common in the United States, where many states impose only few restrictions on the purchase of firearms, despite wide support for increased weapons control.
