United States: potentially radioactive shrimps recalled

Shrimps sold in the United States are recalling because of their possible radioactivity, the American authorities announced on Tuesday. Imported by an Indonesian company, these crustaceans were marketed in 13 of the 50 American states.

This recall occurs after cesium 137, a radio-isotope known to be a source of radioactivity, was detected by the customs authorities “in a cargo of frozen shrimp” of this company called PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, specifies the American food and pharmaceutical control agency (FDA) on its online site.

The level of C137 measured was however minimal, added the FDA, ensuring that “the product would not have a serious danger for consumers”.

Risk of cancer

As for the batch of shrimp already present in American supermarkets, their contamination in the C137 has not yet been confirmed, she adds.

Nevertheless, these products seem to have been prepared or kept “under unsanitary conditions” and the prolonged exposure to such radiation, even minimal, is associated with “an increased risk of cancer”, recalls the FDA.

For all these reasons, the American authorities ask the Walmart distribution giant, which has marketed the product, to organize a recall campaign and to people in possession of lots of these shrimp not to consume them.
