USA: eleven candidates to direct the Fed according to the secretary of the Treasury

Scott Bessent will meet the successors to Jerome Powell in early September to reduce the list to present to President Trump.

The US government has eleven candidates to take over from the current president of the Federal Reserve (Fed), Jerome Powell, whose mandate ends next May, assured Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on an interview on Tuesday.

Bane black by American president Donald Trump, who asked him to lower the rates, Jerome Powell had been appointed by the Republican during his first mandate but he has since accused him of supporting his economic measures, customs duties and lower taxes for the wealthy, accusing him of political bias.

On CNBC, Scott Bessent said that “we announced eleven very solid candidates. I will meet them around Labor Day (September 1, note) to reduce the list to present to President Trump. “

So far Donald Trump had assured of four candidates to join the Fed Governors’ Council, a position of which was released after the resignation of Adriana Kugler, who had been appointed in 2023 by Joe Biden.

The American president has appointed one of his economic advisers, Stephen Miran, to occupy the position until his renewal in late January.

The appointment of Stephen Miran, who so far advised the president and defended his economic policy in the media, must still be confirmed by the Senate with a republican majority.

But Mr. Miran should not go beyond January, Donald Trump considering other candidates for the position, including his main economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, or a former member of the Fed governors, Kevin Warsh.

The 79 -year -old republican relentlessly attacks Jerome Powell, according to him “too slow” to lower interest rates.

The choice of his successor is a highly strategic appointment, at a time when the customs war launched by the American president has made the economic prospects uncertain.
