After Geneva and Vaud, more than 2000 cattle must also be vaccinated in the canton of Valais to protect against contagious nodular dermatosis which progresses in neighboring France. The regions of Champéry, Finhaut and Ferret are affected.
The Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (OSAV) makes compulsory vaccination of all cattle, buffaloes and bison in these three regions, announces the State of Valais on Friday.
He recalls that if contagious nodular dermatosis, which is mainly transmitted by insect bites, represents a threat to cattle, it is safe for humans and other species.
This compulsory vaccination aims “to establish an efficient immune barrier around homes detected in France”, continues the press release. Vaccination is currently the most effective strategy to stop the disease.

Exception on vaccines
The vaccines used are not authorized in Switzerland, but the OSV has issued “a general decision for the importation and use of these vaccines”, notes the State of Valais, which affirms that the experiences made so far show that vaccines are well tolerated.
Vaccination costs are fully covered by the veterinary authorities.
Last week, the OSV had already announced the compulsory vaccination of all the cattle of the canton of Geneva and those of the neighboring region of the Holy Land (VD).
