ValaisThe Grand-Saint-Bernard route is cut by a landslide
A violent thunderstorm on Thursday overflowed two rivers at the height of the Valettes, between Martigny and Sembrancher. The traffic interruption will last.
A violent thunderstorm fell on Thursday afternoon in the Martigny region (VS) late Thursday. It had the consequence of overflowing two rivers, the third and the Borgeaud. These floods led to trees and rubble trunks on the road to Grand-Saint-Bernard, at the height of the Valettes.
A closure that will last
Traffic between Martigny and Sembrancher is therefore completely interrupted. “And the situation will last several hours,” warns Stève Léger, spokesperson for the Valais cantonal police.
Because in addition to the evacuation of everything that hinders the road, it will also be necessary to carry out bed controls of the two torrents, to ensure that there will be no new landslide which could endanger the safety of road users.
Fortunately, Thursday’s overflow did not hurt, specifies Stève Léger.
Mountain deviation
A deviation has been set up, by the Route du Col des Planches. This route is clearly more winding than the international road, which is very taken, which leads to the border with Italy. And traffic may be all the more complicated since August 15 is a public holiday with our Italian and French neighbors. The road could therefore be more frequented than usual on Thursday evening and Friday morning.
The deviation goes through the Col des Planches et Vens. But the road is much more winding than the international route that leads to the border with Italy.
