Vaud: new shooting authorizations will be requested

The canton of Vaud will ask for new authorizations to regulate wolf. The State Councilor in charge of this Vassilis Venizelos file announced on Thursday in an interview with time. The main objective remains the M351 reproductive male wolf, from the Mail du Mont-Tendre, which still runs despite several attempts at regulation.

(Keystone-ATS) “We will continue to deploy our actions. This includes two new decisions. First, we renewed the request for reactive regulation, after the early August shot. Then, a new request for proactive regulation on the entire pack of Montrendre in September is underway, “said the Minister of the Environment in the newspaper columns.

From there to eradicate the whole pack in Montrendre? “The main objective remains to reach M351, and to lower predations. According to the evolution of the pack and the situation, we will adapt our operations, always respecting the federal framework, ”replies Mr. Venizelos.

“But I said it, we are not going to go by the Jura to the sulphate. Regulation is a lever we use, but it is not the only one. Our decisions depend on what is observed on the ground and not on political pressures, ”he adds.

Vaud works with hunters

He said if not regret that the Confederation has disengaged from protective measures. “The regulation conditions have been relaxed. I would like her to put the same energy in supporting herd protection. ” He also recalls that the canton of Vaud works with some 40 hunters, trained specifically to regulate wolf and night fire.

These decisions come as many shepherds and breeders asked for new shots on the Vaudoise pack. Wolf’s attacks have multiplied, in the Jura this summer. Just for the month of July and August so far, the wolf has killed at least 30 annuity animals (young cattle, calves, sheep, goats), according to the latest count of the canton.

Listening to criticism

The environmental state councilor also returned to the complaint filed following a threat of death against him. “I cannot tolerate that my family is threatening. I was told, ‘I’m going to give you fire, I know where you live’. You never know how an angry and distress can react. I filed a complaint to end the threats, ”he explains.

He also says he constantly maintains dialogue on this “highly emotional subject”. “The door of my office is always open. I go on the field to meet the actors, not only the breeders, but also the NGOs, the municipalities, the shepherds, and I have weekly exchanges with them. I do it on all the files, even complex and sensitive, listening to criticism, ”he says.

He also defends himself from the accusations of “vain promises” and “half-measures” recently launched by the Romande association for the regulation of major predators (arrigp). “I refuse to be said that the state does nothing. We are very active and many resources are mobilized ”.

“Last year, the Fauna Guards spent no less than 7000 hours on the management of the wolf. It has an impact on other missions, including the protection of other species, such as the Grand Tétras or the Gucasse, “said Vassilis Venizelos.
