According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian forces slow down Russia’s summer attempts to unravel the defenses on certain parts of the front line.
“They don’t move forward. It is very difficult for our men there. And it’s difficult everywhere”affirme Volodymyr Zelensky.
“It’s also very difficult for Russians, and it’s a good thing for us”he adds.
Russia has claimed to take some localities in recent weeks, but no more solid urban area on the defensive level has fallen into the hands of its troops.
Russian sabotage and recognition groups have tried several times to organize minor incursions near Pokrovsk, in the eastern region of Donetsk, to film symbolic sequences, such as the lifting of a Russian flag, but the Ukrainian forces have rejected these attempts, according to Volodymyr Zelensky.
“This has occurred five to seven times recently, sometimes with only two or six people. Once, they tried to hold a position with 12 people, who were all eliminated by our defenders”said the Ukrainian president.
He describes the situation in the border region of Sumy, in the northeast of the country, as being “much better” that in recent months, noting the progress made by Ukrainian forces in the past six weeks.
Ukraine is looking for patriot missile systems
Russia also intensified its bombings on Ukrainian cities, the second city in the country, Kharkiv, having been struck by a powerful planing bomb for the second consecutive day on Friday. Seven people were injured, authorities said. 42 people were injured on Thursday.
Joyce Msuya, assistant responsible for the United Nations humanitarian affairs, told the Security Council on Friday that the humanitarian situation of Ukraine deteriorated due to the intensification of Russian attacks against civil zones across the country.
“There is no longer a safe place in Ukraine”she said.
Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine worked with international partners to obtain ten Patriot air defense systems manufactured in the United States, which can shoot missiles, three of which have already been confirmed by Germany and Norway.
The Trump administration will sell the systems, he said, but Ukraine’s task is to find funding for the 10 systems.
Ukraine also seeks to obtain a license to make Patriot systems itself.
