Opinions on August 1 diverge: for some, it is a flagship event of the year, while for others, it is a major source of stress. The cause is the fireworks, appreciated for their beauty, but harmful to the environment and disturbing for sensitive people and animals.

What animal owners can do

Pending a political decision and a possible implementation of the initiative for limiting fireworks, animal owners are recommended to take certain measures to reduce the stress of their companions on the day of the national holiday. Yasmine Wenk, animal campaigns coordinator at Four Swiss Four, Share the following recommendations:

  • Pet owners should remain calm and inspire serenity if their animals are frightened.
  • Outdoor cats sensitive to fireworks should stay inside that day to prevent them from fleeing in panic.
  • It is advisable to darken the room and light the television or radio to isolate yourself as much as possible from the outside.
  • Animals must absolutely offer possibilities to retire.
  • Small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs need particular attention, as these leakage animals can be panicked because of lights and noise. Additional hiding places should be installed in their enclosure. If animals live outdoors, it is imperative to enter them at that time in the house or another quiet location, such as a garden hut. If this is not possible, the enclosures should be developed so that neither the noise nor the lights can frighten animals.
  • There are different conventional or alternative drugs on the market that can help dogs during these periods. However, it is important to first ask a veterinarian for advice before administering a drug to the dog.
  • A good solution is to leave the city with the dog during the national holiday to go to more calm and rural regions. Many tourist stations have already banned or limited large fireworks, such as Arosa in Graubünden.
  • Special treats can be given so that the dog combines noise with something positive. This can reduce anxiety in dogs who have not yet experienced a lot of night fireworks.
  • On August 1, the last walk should be carried out in the early evening, so as not to take out the dog at the most noisy moment at nightfall. It is also recommended to attach the dogs with a leash in case a sudden noise causes a leak reflex in them.

Wild animals and so -called animals «annuity» are also concerned

In addition to many pets, wild animals and so -called “rent” animals also suffer from detonations during the Swiss national holiday. Indigenous wild animals, in particular flight animals such as deer and hares, start at each unusual noise. “The sudden explosion combined with the intense light of rockets plunges animals into fear, which can lead in extreme cases to false layers or to a panicked leak causing death,” warns Dominik Del Castillo, country manager for wild animals in four Swiss legs.

For pets, wild fauna and so -called “rent” animals spend a stress -free night, four legs advise not to light fireworks near forests, wetlands, natural reserves, zoos and farms. Even better: to completely give up noisy fireworks.
