While Trump threatens India additional customs duties, Narendra Modi advocates energy self -sufficiency

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this Friday, August 15, that his country was trying to achieve self -sufficiency, especially in terms of energy, and that he would defend the interests of India “as a bulwark”.

Head on self -sufficiency. This Friday, August 15, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the country’s autonomy one of his priorities, especially in terms of energy. His speech, delivered on the occasion of the Independence Festival since the imposing ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi, intervenes that India faces intense pressure and threats of additional customs rights from the United States.

“Autonomy is the foundation of a developed India” and “freedom loses all its meaning if one becomes too dependent on the others,” he said, after an aerial parade of military helicopters which dispersed flower petals above a crowd of thousands of people invited.

US Ultimatum

Donald Trump has given India, one of the largest crude oil importers in the world, three weeks to find alternative suppliers to Russia. For the American president, the deadline of August 27 is an attempt to deprive Moscow of significant income for his offensive in Ukraine. Samples of 25% already in place will double at 50% if India does not conclude an agreement.

“We know that we remain dependent on many countries to meet our energy needs,” said Narendra Modi. “But to build a truly autonomous India, we have to reach energy independence,” he added.

The Indian Prime Minister has urged scientists and engineers to focus on the development of key sectors and technologies, including fighter aircraft, semiconductors and military equipment systems.

“By the end of the year, we will have semiconductors made in India on the market,” he said. Narendra Modi also announced that the country was working on the construction of its own space station and would have a “defense shield” during the next decade, without giving more details.
