Microsoft published its traditional Patch Tuesday in early August, supposed to correct various flaws and bugs. Except that this time, the operation turned to vinegar for part of the users. Installation errors, failing events newspapers, a concern for SSD that become illegible … and above all, a critical breakdown: Windows reset and recovery options no longer work on certain versions which are still supported. In question: the cumulative update KB5063709.
Critical bug: Windows 10 and 11 reset no longer works after the last update
Even if the “reset this PC” function is planted, it only remains to hope for a miracle … or a Patch of Microsoft. © Shuttershock

The promise is known: in case of concern, a short tour in the settings, click on “Reset this PC”… and everything leaves like new. Except that since the installation of the KB5063709 update, deployed during the Tuesday patch of August 13, 2025, this option has simply broken down on many computers.
Microsoft has confirmed on its Windows Release Health dashboard that the reset and recovery functions have become ineffective on several versions of Windows 10 and 11. Clearly, if you try to reset your machine via settings> System> Recovery, or even via remote tools Remotewipe CSP, it will fail.
After installing the Windows security update in August 2025 (KB5063709) on one of the customer versions mentioned below in the “Platforms concerned” section, attempts to reset the device may fail.
Versions concerned:
- Windows 11 22H2 et 23H2
- Windows 10 22H2
- Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 et 2021
- Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 et 2021
Faced with the magnitude of the bug, the company is already working on an out -of -cycle (OOB) correction which should be available before the next Patch Tuesday of September 9, 2025. In the meantime, a simple instruction: avoid any attempt to reset, at the risk of making your system unusable, even unusable.
Good surprise, however: Windows 11 version 24H2, the latest, seems spared. Microsoft does not hide it: it presents it as the “more reliable” version to date.
