Your Windows task manager has been cheating on you for years

The Windows task manager underestimates your GPU performance according to Valve, which launches a specially optimized competitor instructor for players.

Valve has just brought a direct blow to the Windows task manager. In the latest beta version of Steam, the gaming giant claims more precise GPU monitoring than that of Microsoft, accusing the integrated tool of Windows of ” underestimate performance In many situations.

Valve is focusing on a specially optimized approach for players, where Microsoft offers a general tool.

A new method of calculation that is controversial

Steam’s new performance monitor introduces a new calculation method to measure GPU use. Unlike the traditional Windows approach, the valve tool takes better account of the variations in use when several processes simultaneously request the graphics card. This technical shade becomes important in the current ecosystem where navigators, applications and games compete for graphic resources.

Innovation is justified by the evolution of the modern software landscape. Web browsers are now massively using hardware acceleration, streaming applications use GPU encoding, and even operating systems take advantage of the integrated graphics cards. In this complex multitasking context, Valve affirms that his approach more faithfully reflects the reality of GPU use.

We then obtain values of use sometimes higher than those displayed by the Windows task manager. A gap that can disturb users accustomed to Microsoft references, but which Valve presents as a necessary correction in the face of the limits of the competing tool.

The current beta version also includes other improvements: various bug corrections and redesigned steam pages for wide screens. These additions suggest a global approach to improving user experience, whose new GPU monitoring constitutes the technical centerpiece.

omment activate the new performance overlay

To activate this new performance monitor, go to the Settings menu> in play and scrolle to the “Overlay performance monitor” section.

You can define here the location of the monitor, the data displayed (FPS, CPU, RAM, VRAM) but also the appearance of the text, such as its size, saturation or contrast. The opacity of the bottom can also be changed to make the display more discreet.

Steam announces that the overlay will be led to host new data in order to “detect certain current scenarios of poor hardware performance”. In addition, it is currently only compatible with Windows, but should achieve during the year for Steamos and MacOS.
