The Minister of Finance, François-Philippe Champagne, announced that Canada will repeal the digital services tax and resume trade negotiations with the United States.
This announcement was made in a press release following a telephone interview between Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump.
This decision comes three days after Donald Trump announced the end of all trade negotiations with Canada due to the tax.
The Declaration of Minister Champagne indicates that the tax is repealed in anticipation of the resumption of commercial negotiations and that Canada still targets an agreement by July 21, the deadline fixed by MM. Carney and Trump at the G7 summit.
A spokesperson for Mark Carney said Champagne was also maintained today with the American Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent.
The first payment for the digital services tax was to be made on Monday, forcing technological giants such as Amazon, Google and Meta to pay a 3 % tax on the income of their Canadian users.
