The breathtaking images of a new telescope

After more than 20 years of planning and construction, the Vera C. Rubin observatory, in Chile, has just unveiled its first images. And they are spectacular. In just 10 hours of observation, the new telescope has already discovered 2104 new asteroids in our solar system, in addition to revealing many other celestial objects that astronomers have not yet had time to name. It is easy to get caught up in images and videos published on the Telescope website1or by the application that allows you to explore the discoveries2. The images of the trifid nebulae and the lagoon are particularly striking3.

Niki de Saint Phalle wanted to “bring joy to people” and despite the seriousness of several themes addressed, this is the objective that this exhibition at the very successful MNBAQ reaches, says our columnist.
A passage through Quebec often means, for me, a judgment at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Quebec (MNBAQ), which almost never disappoints. This summer, it allows us to discover an unknown Franco-American artist, Niki de Saint Phalle, whose works show us all the colors. Clean and figuratively. I only knew about her the Stravinsky fountain, a great work of public art located near the Center Pompidou in Paris. The exhibition allowed me to take the measure of his talent and his ambition. She wanted to “bring joy to people,” we are told. Despite the seriousness of several themes addressed, this is the goal that this very successful exhibition is taking.

Inspiring, this idea from Copenhagen (yes, again) and which aims to reward tourists who take care of the city. The France-Presse agency thus tells the story of Rocio Gómez, a Mexican tourist who benefited from an hour of free boat because she took advantage of her ride to pick up waste floating on the canals. Copenhagen thus offers cafes, pastries or concert tickets to visitors who do gardening or various tasks. I see a way of reducing the ecological footprint of tourists and, perhaps, to restore their reputation while several residents turn against surcourism.

Hunting for (customers) ghosts

From July 17, restaurateurs will be able to impose a penalty of $ 10 on those who reserve a table at the restaurant, but who do not present themselves when the time comes.
There is nothing pleasant to be imposed on a “penalty”. And yet, “we are returned there”, as my colleague Marie-Eve Fournier wrote. It had become necessary that we intervene to “regulate the simple good manners” and slow down the increase in ghost customers in restaurants (which caused an average of tens of thousands of dollars to be lost by establishment each year). Hence the idea of the new regulation planned by Quebec, which will allow restaurants to impose a penalty of $ 10 on July 17 on the too many customers who reserve a table and do not appear there. Yes, it will be more annoying for customers. But there is a simple way to avoid it: do not turn into a ghost!
