It will soon be forbidden to use mowing robots between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. in Wallonia to further protect hedgehogs, a species almost threatened with extinction in Wallonia. Thus decided on Thursday the Walloon government, by validating at first reading a draft decree written by the minister in charge of nature, Anne-Catherine Dalcq (MR).
This night animal species frequents many open environments, including gardens.
Each year, the cash revalidation centers naturally living in the wild state (Creaves) and the veterinarians note an increasing number of serious injuries, even mortalities, linked to the night use of these devices, justified the Minister of Nature, in a press release.
The decree project provides for the ban on using mowing robots between 6:00 p.m. and 9 a.m. next spring.
Two exceptions are planned: the maintenance of sports fields, subject to special calendars, and public security cases, as near airports.
This measure also meets an increasing demand for clarity on the ground, added Minister Dalcq. In recent years, several municipalities have adopted their own regulations on the use of mowing robots, sometimes very different from one place to another. The future decree of Minister DALCQ sets a uniform rule for all the inhabitants of the Walloon Region, while ensuring more effective protection of proximity biodiversity.
