Unsurprisingly, the Netflix platform was particularly consulted in France in 2024, even if its share decreases compared to the previous year.
Internet – as obvious. The American tech giants, and in particular the Netflix streaming champion, represented almost half of the Internet traffic in France in 2024, unveiled this Friday, July 4, the telecoms regulatory authority, the ARCEP.
Last year, “About 47 % of traffic entering the four main Internet service providers comes from five players: Netflix, Akamai, Facebook, Google and Amazon”according to this annual report on the state of Internet in France. One way to clearly illustrate the boom in the consumption of streaming films and series, replay television and the broadcast of videos on social networks.
In this ranking, Netflix remains the actor with the highest share (12.3 %), even if it was clearly fell from the end of 2022, where it was around 20 %. “We are very optimizing data consumption, thanks to our technology and the adoption of new televisions” whose faster chips make it possible to decode stronger compressions and therefore to use less data, also explained to AFP, Thomas Volmer, world director of content distribution policy at Netflix.
The rise of AI closely monitored
The server operator Akamai, used by many websites and platforms like Disney+, now represents 12.2 % of the total, almost stable compared to last year (12.3 % in 2023). Amazon then arrives with 9.9 % by including its live video platform Twitch. Google (7.3 %) and Meta (5.4 %) complete this Top 5.
The global internet traffic in France continues to increase, reaching 50.8 terabits per second at the end of 2024, an increase of 9.2 % in one year. Arcep also notes the continuous development of generative artificial intelligence (AI). However, the latter, whose systems are “Often opaque regarding the sources and parameters used”is likely “To accentuate the risks of confinement, bias and” algorithmic bubbles “due to a loss of user control over their online choices”warns the regulator.
In this sense, it calls the European Commission to regulate cloud and AI which watches “At the opening of the market” pour “Preserve fair competition and a framework conducive to innovation”.
