The Huawei technological giant dominated the smartphones market in China in the second quarter for the first time in more than four years, exceeding the American Apple and local competitors like Xiaomi, according to IDC based in the United States.
(Keystone-ATS) Based in Shenzhen, Huawei delivered 12.5 million phones in China over the quarter, or 18.1% of the market, indicates an IDC report.
The recovery of Huawei in China comes after the company was faced with a series of export controls imposed by the United States, prohibitions in Western countries and an investigation for corruption in Belgium.
After six quarters of growth, the Chinese market fell 4% compared to the second quarter of 2024, totaling 69 million units sent.
“Despite the recent commercial truce between the United States and China, the global economic environment presents persistent challenges, with consumer confidence that remains sluggish,” said Arthur Guo, principal analyst at IDC.
“This suggests that a significant increase in the demand for smartphones is unlikely in the short term, and the market will have to sail in a more complex landscape in the second half of the year,” he added.
Spying
The Chinese economy increased by 5.2% in the second quarter, according to official figures despite the commercial showdown hired by US President Donald Trump.
Huawei was at the center of an intense confrontation between the first two world economies after Washington said that his equipment could be used for Beijing spying, an allegation that the company denies.
Since 2019, sanctions have limited business access to technologies manufactured in the United States, forcing it to develop its own components.
Apple suffers from a drop in iPhone sales in China and sold its most sold smartphone brand status in the country with two local rivals last year. In the IDC report, Apple came in fifth position on the list, keeping 13.9% of the Chinese smartphones market and shipping 9.6 million units.
