At least 18 people were killed and around thirty others injured on Friday during the fall of a bus in a ravine in the Junin region, in the central Andes of Peru, according to the health authorities.
“Until now, we have listed 18 people who died in this accident,” a spokesperson for the Tarma medical services, 240 km east of Lima, told AFP, adding that two children are among the deceased.
Fall of 50 meters
According to RPP radio, more than 60 people were aboard this bus which left the road in a particularly winding sector and plunged into a deep precipice of about 50 meters. The bus connected the capital Lima to the Merced, in Amazon.
Traffic accidents are frequent in Peru, mostly due to speeding and other imprudence, the impunity which largely benefits the offenders, the poor condition of the road network and the lack of signaling. According to police, 3173 people died in road accidents in the country in 2024.
