The current iPad Proapple is already equipped with an OLED screen in tandem which reaches a full -screen brightness of 1,000 nits and an HDR brightness peak of 1,600 nits, while being comparatively efficient in energy. According to a new report by The Elecapple is currently planning to equip future iPhones with an OLED screen in tandem. LG Display would have proposed to develop a simplified tandem panel specifically for the iPhone at the end of 2024.
Instead of distributing all the RGB sub-pixels on two OLED layers, the front layer would accommodate all the sub-pixels, while the rear layer would be limited to blue subpixels. This would reduce costs while providing higher brightness and lower energy consumption compared to the OLED screen of the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple would be in talks with LG Display and Samsung Display concerning the development of corresponding panels, which means that the commercial deployment would coincide with the iPhone 20 Pro in 2028 at the earliest.
The delay in the potential deployment of these simplified OLED TANDEM screens would mainly be due to the development delay of Samsung Display, but Apple does not want to install a panel that can only be manufactured by LG DISPLAY, as this would complicate price negotiations and increase the risk of the supply chain. As usual, these first rumors must be treated with caution, because Apple’s projects could change in the years to come.
