A drone used by Russia has briefly entered the Lithuanian airspace, according to the Lithuanian Minister of Defense
Dovile Sakaliene reported Thursday evening that a gerbera type drone, used by Russia, had briefly entered the airspace of her country, a member of NATO, from Belarus. Contradictory information has circulated in Lithuania since morning on an unidentified object that fell on the ground near the Lithuano-Bélarussian border.
“We can confirm that it was a herbera – or gerbera”said Mr.me Sakaliene on LUrt Lithuanian public radio. “For the moment, we have no data indicating that the object has been deliberately sent to our territory”she added.
The Minister said that the Lithuanian army had followed this object when it was still above Belarus, an ally country of Moscow, even before it entered the Lithuanian airspace, but decided not to mobilize NATO planes stationed in Lithuania.
“The object fell very quickly and (…) has definitely not represented a threat ”added Mme Sakaliene. Nevertheless, according to Lithuanian media, when the drone entered the Lithuanian space, the President of the Parliament and the Prime Minister were taken to a shelter. According to Mme Sakaliene, the incident is now the subject of an investigation, including the way and the time to inform the public of a potential threat.
