France goes even further. From 2028, a high security prison will open its doors in the French tropical forest of French, an overseas department located in South America. It will be specifically intended for major criminals and terrorists. The guard will be provided by a paramilitary unit.
Minister Verlinden intends to study these foreign examples in order to assess the possibilities of implementation in Belgium. In particular, it will be necessary to determine which prisons will be eligible. A working group has already been set up, made up of representatives of the police, the federal prosecutor’s office, the security of the state, the judiciary and the general management of penal establishments.
According to Annnelies Verlinden, the legal basis for a separate security scheme already exists, but additional legislative work may be necessary according to the conditions of detention chosen.
