The tragedy occurred last Thursday in a Medical Center in Long Island in New York. A 61 -year -old man, present to accompany his wife during an MRI, entered the examination room at the request of a technician. The latter had asked her a hand to help the patient get off the table.
But by approaching the machine, the powerful magnetic field of MRI immediately attracted the metallic chain which he wore around his neck, causing him violently towards the device. According to the police, “The victim wore a large metal chain around the neck, which attracted him to the machine”.
The victim’s wife, a direct witness of the scene, said that her husband was “Returned, pulled inward, and hit the MRI”. With the help of the technician, she tried in vain to release him. Seriously injured, the man did not survive his injuries.
The American National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bio-Engineering (NIBIB) recalls in the New York Times that“An MRI machine is powerful enough to project a wheelchair through a room”. According to the Nibib, it is imperative that anyone entering an MRI room withdraws “Jewelry, piercings and any metal object”.
