A study identifies a promising anti-cancer food family

A study published in the journal Science identifies a vegetable capable of “killing cancer cells” and therefore slowing down the progression of the disease. Although promising, the tests have not yet been carried out on man.

Prostate cancer is the most common in humans in France, with more than 8,500 deaths each year. This disease, which affects an essential gland of the male reproductive system, can in many cases be treated. But some cancers become resistant to treatments, pushing research to explore new avenues, especially on the diet side.

A diet that is too rich in fat, excessive consumption of red meat, tobacco or family history is identified as major risk factors. Conversely, a balanced diet, especially rich in ingredients such as fruits, vegetables and antioxidants, could play a role in the prevention or slowdown of certain cancers. And it is precisely a component present in green leafy vegetables that today attracts the attention of scientists: menadione.

A promising study against prostate cancer

A study published in the Revue Science, quoted by Topsy and led by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory highlighted the surprising effect of a pro-oxidant supplement: the menadione. This compound, a pioneer in vitamin K, could slow down the progression of prostate cancer. Unlike vitamin E-previously tested without success-Menadione does not act like an antioxidant, but as a pro-oxidant. And it was precisely this difference that caught the attention of researchers.

In their experimentation, mice with prostate cancer have received doses of Ménadione. Result: a significant disruption of the survival mechanisms of cancer cells. More specifically, menadione has exhausted a lipid called PI (3) P, essential to the survival of tumor cells. Researchers have thus observed a significant reduction in the progression of cancer in treated mice.

“We wonder if, taking these food supplements, they could slow down the progression of this disease”, said Professor Lloyd Trotman’s team. The long -term objective: to propose this supplementation to human patients, especially those whose disease is still at an early stage.

Where to find this supplement naturally: green leafy vegetables

Menadione, or vitamin K3, is not available as a common supplement, but its natural origin is well known: green leafy vegetables. Rich in vitamin K1, these foods are essential for many biological functions, including blood coagulation, and could play a role in the prevention of certain chronic diseases.

Green leafy vegetables incorporate several botanical families, including some of the best allies to integrate regularly into the plate. For example, spinach, curly cabbage (kale), card with card, broccoli, Roman lettuce or even arugula.

These vegetables are not only little calorie but also rich in fiber, minerals and antioxidants. If they do not replace medical treatment, they represent an accessible lever to support overall health and potentially slow down the evolution of certain pathologies.

Pending clinical trials on humans, this discovery opens a promising path in the fight against prostate cancer and recalls how the content of our plates can influence our long -term health.
