About fifteen Democratic states pursues the Trump administration, which wants to prohibit transitional treatments for transgender minors

The complaint, supported by New York State and California, believes that surveys carried out on clinics providing gender transition treatments “reflect an unconstitutional attempt to encroach on the power of states to regulate medicine”.

California and fifteen Democratic states announced on Friday to continue the Trump administration on Friday, to challenge its attempt to prohibit health professionals from providing transition to transgender minors. Donald Trump had made a major campaign argument. When he returned to the White House, he promised to end the “Transgender delirium” and notably signed a decree assimilating these treatments to a «mutilation»and ordering the Ministry of Justice to investigate clinics providing this care.

Under pressure, several clinics of this kind across the country have closed or suspended their services. “The incessant attacks of the President and his administration against care asserting the genre endanger adolescents already vulnerable whose health and well-being are at stake”accused the California Attorney General Rob Bonta in a statement announcing the federal complaint. The government’s desire to prohibit transitional treatments is “Cruel and irresponsible”he added.

“Unconstitutional attempt”

The complaint, notably supported by New York State, Illinois and Massachusetts, believes that the surveys carried out by the Ministry of Justice “Reflect an unconstitutional attempt to encroach on the power of states to regulate medicine”. Several American states, including California, guarantee by law access to transitional treatments, whether hormonal or surgical.

Many transgender experts, patients and activists ensure that these treatments reduce stress, identity questions and suicidal thoughts sometimes linked to gender dysphoria. But their growing use in minors has raised shields in the United States: many are worried that children can use it too early and come to regret their choices.

Half of the US states have prohibited access to these treatments to transgender minors. In June, the majority conservative Supreme Court agreed, believing that the prohibition in force in Tennessee is not a medical discrimination. Out of 1.6 million people defining themselves as transgender in the United States, more than 300,000 are aged 13 to 17, according to a study by Williams Institute, a UCLA University reflection group.
