Today, the American Gériatrics Society (AGS) has announced the release of alternative treatments to drugs selected in the beer criteria of the American company of the American Gériatrics Society® (DOI: 10.1111 / JGS.19500), an updated clinical resource designed to help healthcare professionals identify safer and more suitable treatment options for the elderly. This companion tool is based on AGS 2023 beer criteria® For the use of potentially inappropriate drugs in the elderly (DOI: 10.1111 / JGS.18372) which remain one of the most frequently cited reference tools, identifying the drugs which can be inappropriate to prescribe to the elderly who do not receive living care.
“With the AGS Beers criteria®We help clinicians to recognize potentially inappropriate drugs for elderly use, “said Michael Steinman, MD, AGSF, AGS BEERS Criteria® Co -president and co -president of the panel who developed the list of AGS alternatives. “Now, with the list of updated alternatives, we take the next suggestions based on evidence for what non -pharmacological and pharmacological clinicians could use instead. »»
We really took a step back and asked: “Where are the clinicians likely to meet challenges with the beers’ criteria®-And where to have clear alternatives would be the most useful? The panel of experts focused on drugs which, in our view, would be the most useful for providing alternatives so that we had not lacked anything important and that our selections really reflected the needs of those who take care of the elderly. “”
Todd P. Semla, MS, Pharmd, co -president of the alternative list panel and AGS Beers criteria®
To develop new AGS Beers criteria® List of alternatives, AGS has summoned an interdisciplinary working group of experts in a variety of clinical syndromes and disease areas. The result is an organized list of alternatives based on evidence that is often safer and just as or more effective than potentially inappropriate drugs they can replace. The list also includes additional resources for more in -depth recommendations and links with patient guides and other resources to help implement alternative strategies in their clinical practice.
“This resource is designed by thinking of the needs of clinicians – from its clear organization to its practical accessibility,” said AGS president, Paul Mulhausen, MD, MHS, AGSF. “I know that it will be an essential resource for many of us who work to provide safer and more personalized care for the elderly. »»
This new resource reflects AGS’s continuous commitment to support safer prescription and improve the results for the health of the elderly. Alternative treatments to certain drugs in the beer criteria of the American company of the Gériatrics Society 2023® (DOI: 10.1111 / JGS.19500) has just been published in the last edition of the Journal de l’American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) and will soon be incorporated into the AGS Beers criteria® Mobile application for easy access to travel.
