Air Canada and Ita Airways conclude a codes sharing agreement to strengthen links between Canada and Italy

Air Canada and Ita Airways have announced a new codes sharing agreement aimed at expanding the transport options between Canada and Italy, while opening access to destinations on four continents.

The agreement, which comes into force for trips from July 21, will allow the two carriers to affix their flight code on certain links operated by the other company.

For Air Canada passengers, this means correspondence beyond Rome-Fiumicino to ten cities in Italy, Africa, Middle East and Albania.

Ita Airways customers arriving in Toronto will be able to reach ten destinations in Canada and the United States.

“We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Ita Airways thanks to this new codes sharing agreement, which complements our already solid network to Italy,” said Mark Galardo, executive vice-president, commercial affairs and president of the Cargo sector at Air Canada.

“This rapprochement will allow customers traveling with Air Canada to Rome-Fiumicino to reserve practical correspondences more easily for ten popular destinations in Italy, Africa, Israel and Albania. »»

As part of the agreement, Air Canada will add its AC code to the flights operated by Ita Airways from Rome to Lamezia Terme, Palermo, Catania, Florence, Bari, Cairo, Tunis*, Algiers*, Tirana and Tel Aviv (this last link being currently suspended).

For its part, Ita Airways will affix its AZ code on Air Canada flights from Toronto to Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, St. John’s, as well as to Boston, Orlando, Dallas and Fort Lauderdale.

“This coded coded-sharing understanding is an important advance in our growth strategy,” said Joerg Eberhart, CEO of ITA Airways.

“This partnership improves connectivity for our passengers between Italy and North America – our first market outside Italy -, whether business or leisure trips. It also makes it possible to simplify the journeys of passengers of Italian origin living in Canada or the United States. »»

The two companies also work to allow reciprocal accumulation and exchange of loyalty points through Aeroplan and Volare.

Ita Airways also plans to join Star Alliance by the beginning of 2026.

This new codes sharing is added to the growing presence of Air Canada in Italy, with up to 39 weekly flights this summer to Rome, Milan, Venice and Naples. The company recently launched a new Montreal – Naples link and offers railway correspondence with Trenitalia around 30 Italian cities.

Ita Airways, for its part, serves 59 destinations during the summer season, including 16 intercontinental and 27 international. It also provides seasonal links to several Mediterranean destinations and has widened its world range with codes sharing agreements with five companies from the Lufthansa group.

According to the press release, thefts to Tunis and Algiers remain subject to the approval of government authorities.
