Spain was the most popular destination for Swiss air passengers in 2024, with 3.1 million departures identified by the Federal Statistics Office (OFS). The United Kingdom follows closely, with 2.89 million travelers from Swiss airports.
Germany (1.5 million), Portugal (1.49 million), France (1.36 million) and Italy (1.35 million) follow in the classification of the most frequented air destinations, according to data published Wednesday by the OFS. In total, 79 % of Swiss passengers had Europe for destination.
The starting airport strongly influences the choice of destinations, notes the OFS. Since Zurich, four times more passengers have taken the plane for Germany than for France, while in Geneva, the trend is reversed: France attracts significantly more travelers than Germany.
Apart from Europe, 8 % of passengers have traveled to Asia, an equivalent percentage flew to the Americas (from the North, Central or South), while 5 % took the direction of Africa and 0.4 % that of Oceania, according to the OFS.
Seasonal trends
The month of July remains the most busy with 2.6 million departures, which corresponds to the usual trend. Conversely, the months of January and November record a quieter traffic, with around 1.5 million passengers each.
The volume of travelers varies sharply depending on the season and the destination. According to the OFS, destinations like CAP (South Africa) or Phuket (Thailand) are particularly popular during the winter, while the Mediterranean Islands, such as Mallorca (Spain) and Crete (Greece), know a more important influx between April and October.
A total of 24 million passengers took off from a Swiss airport in 2024. Before the COVVI-19 pandemic, in 2019, this figure reached 25 million.
