Alain Anziani, former president of Bordeaux Métropole and former mayor of Mérignac, is dead

His fate was sealed: he had been touched for several years by two cancers and suffering from Parkinson’s disease. However, Alain Anziani had chosen to continue his political commitments, those of President (Socialist Party, PS) of Bordeaux Métropole (2020-2024) and mayor of Mérignac, in Gironde (2014-2025). Until it is forced to give it up. He died on July 19, at the age of 74.

Born May 30, 1951 in Paris, holder of a master’s degree in philosophy, in law, and a DEA of economics, he became a lawyer in 1979. It was in 1982, at 31, that he arrived in Gironde to join the cabinet of the President of the Aquitaine Region, the socialist Philippe Madrelle (1937-2019). Alain Anziani was then responsible for planning, while the decentralization and the transfer of administrative skills of the State begin to local authorities. In parallel, he is involved with the Departmental Council of Lay Family Associations in Gironde, of which he became president in 1986.

If he has always defined himself as an atheist, he cultivated his affection for Buddhism and his philosophy. He had traveled in Tibet, Nepal and India, and encountered twice the Dalai Lama.
