After the government’s announcements on a restriction of the conditions of movement in France of a “certain number of Algerian dignitaries”, Algeria announces apply “the principle of reciprocity” and denounces a violation of the rules of diplomacy.
A “astonishment” for Algeria. The country reacted in a statement this Thursday, July 24, of the decision of the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau to restrict the conditions of movement in France of a “certain number of Algerian dignitaries”, after the refusal of Algiers to resume 120 nationals under the obligation to leave French territory (OQTF).
“This measure constitutes a serious damage to the proper functioning of the Algerian diplomatic mission in France, as well as a manifest violation of the provisions of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations”, deplores Algeria.
In response to this announcement, the country has decided “to apply the principle of reciprocity” with rigor and without delay.
Algiers ready to seize the United Nations
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims, after exchanges with its French counterpart to “ask for clarifications” that this measure was “taken by the French Interior Ministry, without the knowledge of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs”.
“In total opacity and without less official notification, as the basic rules of diplomatic practice want,” denounces Algiers.
In this context, Algeria reserves the right to resort to “all appropriate legal paths, including the referral of the United Nations”.
Bruno Retailleau’s decision was announced by government spokesperson on Wednesday, July 23 at the report of the Council of Ministers, without mention of date on which this measure would be applied.
“He did not escape you that the Minister of the Interior was increasingly going to make firmer arrangements vis-à-vis Algerian diplomacy,” said Sophie Primas.
