The day of Saturday August 9 could have sold out with a dreadful drama in Cortellazzo, a seaside resort near Venice. A doctor and former rugby player, Pierpaolo Serena was on the beach with his teammates Alvise Bavaresco and Dennis Silva when two women arrested them. They were alarmed by the state of health of a 16 -day crying baby, who seemed to present burns.

“We immediately went to see her, without hesitation,” said the doctor to “Corriere della will be”. The three athletes arrived with the little girl, surrounded by her parents from Eastern Europe, who spoke neither Italian nor English. The infant’s condition was alarming: “She suffered from serious burn in her chest, face and torso. We did not see his eyes, because his eyelids were strongly swollen. (…) From what I saw, if she had spent one more night under these conditions, she could have died, “explains Pierpaolo Serena.

The mother is afraid and fled

Probably due to the language barrier, the parents of the little one did not understand that the three men wanted to help them. “I tried to make myself understand the best I have been able to explain to them that the situation was serious,” said the doctor. But frightened, the infant’s mother wrapped her in a towel and fled from the beach. “I called and coordinated the emergency services and the police, who were perhaps the only hope of bringing the mother of the little girl to reason,” explains Pierpaolo.

The tourist and her little daughter were finally found in their camping tent. The child was treated on the spot before being taken to the hospital. “I will always remember the state of the little girl. It is not every day that we see such a thing, “adds the old rugby player, who underlines the solidarity shown by the bathers:” All the people on this beach have cooperated and made their possible to save a life. ” The hero concludes modestly: “I simply did my duty, both professionally and citizen.”
