After three years of development, the initiative carried by a consortium of beauty actors enters the operational phase. Furthermore, This rating system is now used by several consumer brands such as L’Oréal Paris. Meanwhile, Neutrogena, Nivea or Eucacerin, which have started to publish their product scores in several European markets, as well as in the United Kingdom.
The project was initiated in 2021 by L’Oréal. LVMH, Henkel or Unilever, joined since around forty actors, including Coty, Estée Lauder, Puig, Shiseido, Sisley, Amorepacific, La FEBEA, Cosmetic Valley, or the beauty: ecobeautyscore, environmental rating system Cosmetics Europe organization.
Structured in the form of a non -profit association. the Ecobeautyscore system aims to create a common framework to assess the environmental footprint of care and hygiene products. Like the Nutriscore in food. it attributes a note from A to E, established from 16 impact indicators (carbon, water, natural resources, pollution, etc.), throughout the product life cycle.
The system is based on the methodology of the environmental imprint of products (EEP) established by the European Union. and has been validated by Ecocert. The participating brands will be subject to regular audits, with certification by an independent third party.
“Ecobeautyscore offers the beauty sector the transparency tool that was sorely lacking in it. For the first time. brands can communicate on their environmental impact in a coherent, digestible and based on scientific data”, explains Jean-Baptiste Massignon the director general of the Ecobeautyscore association.
At first, Ecobeautyscore is deployed in beauty: ecobeautyscore, environmental rating system four segments: shampoos, conditioner, shower and facials. Interested brands can freely access a system test version and support resources when it is set up.
The consortium provides for a progressive extension to other product categories, with an international opening in the coming months.
