Breakfast is not the most important meal of the day, a specialist explains why

Rather than breakfast, another meal should not be overlooked to take care of your health.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. Everyone has already heard this sentence. The idea is in particular that it takes energy to start the day off right. A majority of the Western population also has breakfast. If it is complete and balanced, it can indeed be a major asset for health.

First for the weight: it has been proven that jumping breakfast increases the risk of obesity. This habit also has an impact on other diseases. “Backing breakfast has been associated with a 27 % increase in heart disease risk, 21 % of the risk of type 2 diabetes in men and 20 % of the risk of type 2 diabetes in women,” said BBC.

However, the breakfast we are used to is not always necessary. It is often too rich in sugars and fats, and not enough in fiber and protein. The rise of intermittent fasting, which consists in not eating for a number of hours in the day (for example from dinner to lunch) questioned the interest of breakfast.

In reality, “when breakfast seems to be the most important meal of the day, it could actually be dinner,” said Courtney Peterson, assistant professor in nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama. The time at which it is taken is indeed particularly important.

A study carried out in particular by INSERM and INRAE with 100,000 people had precisely demonstrated that dinner late had harmful effects on health. The study authors had specified in a press release that “eating late, after 9:00 p.m., is associated with a 28 % increase in the risk of cerebrovascular disease, such as stroke (stroke), compared to a last food plug before 8:00 p.m., especially in women”.

They also observed that “a longer duration of the night fast is associated with a reduction in the risk of cerebrovascular diseases”. The ideal would therefore be to dine early – especially for people who go to bed early – and eat a balanced breakfast in the event of hunger in the morning. We avoid industrial fruit juices, white bread sandwiches with butter, and we rather put on fruit, good fats (olive oil, avocado …) and proteins!
