Canada “deeply disappointed” by Chinese prices on canola

Canada said it was “deeply disappointed” on Tuesday of the Chinese decision to temporarily inflict customs duties on Canadian canola products, an oilseed -related oilseeds, against the backdrop of dumping.

The Chinese trade ministry announced earlier Tuesday that Beijing was going to receive 75.8% customs duties on Thursday on Canadian canola imports.

The reason invoked? An investigation by Beijing, which concluded preliminary that Canadian imports had caused “significant damage” to national industry, according to the ministry.

Canada is one of the main world producers of Canola, an oilseed cultivation used to produce cooking oil, animal food and biodiesel.

The majority of its exports in this area go to only two customers: the United States and China, two countries with which Ottawa has recently competed in customs duties.

Canada said it was “deeply disappointed with China’s decision”.

“We do not sell the Canola at low prices. Our farmers, who work hard, provide world -class food to Canadians and our foreign trading partners, “defended the Minister of International Commerce Hoaning Sidhu and the Minister of Agriculture Heath Macdonald in a joint statement.

“We are ready to initiate a constructive dialogue with the Chinese authorities to approach our respective trade concerns,” they said.

Representatives of the sector have given a warning regarding the consequences of these customs duties for producers. “If a solution is not found quickly, the impact will be felt quickly on our farms,” wrote Rick White, director of the Canadian Association of Canola producers (CCGA), in a press release.
