(Ottawa) Canada’s special representative for the fight against anti -Semitism announces her retirement, three months before the end of her mandate.
Deborah Lyons was special about Canada for the preservation of the Holocaust memory and the fight against anti -Semitism since October 2023 and has not explained the reasons for his departure before the expiration of his mandate this fall.
She indicated on social networks that she left her functions “with great sadness” and with deep disappointments, while highlighting her achievements, in particular her work with institutions such as universities and police services to improve the understanding of anti -Jewish hatred.
Mme Lyons claims that his office fought anti -Semitism “with vigor and a passion that we do not find in many other countries”.
And yet, she says she leaves her duties with concern about the number of Canadians who believe that supporting a community amounts to minimizing another.
Deborah Lyons is the second person to occupy the position of special envoy for the fight against anti -Semitism, after the former prosecutor General Irwin Cotler, who held this position from 2020 to 2023.
Mme Lyons took office just a few days after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, which caused vast demonstrations throughout Canada.
