Carney calls for de -escalation after strikes on Iranian nuclear bases

Prime Minister Mark Carney calls for de-escalation after the strikes carried out by the United States on Iranian nuclear installations on Saturday evening.

Mr. Carney published a message on social networks which indicates that this American military action was intended to mitigate The threats posed by Iran but that the situation in the Middle East remains very volatile.

Stability in the region is a priority. Canada calls on the parties to immediately return to the negotiating table and find a diplomatic solution to put an end to this crisis.

A quote from Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney

This military intervention associates the United States with the efforts made by Israel to scuttle the Iranian nuclear program which, according to Carney, is a threat to international security.

The international reaction to the American strikes on Saturday evening has largely echoed the calls for diplomacy, even if many countries have also highlighted the dangers of the Tehran nuclear program.

Mr. Carney reiterated Canada’s position that Iran should never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

The Prime Minister of Canada cited a declaration by G7 leaders at the end of the summit held in Alberta last week, according to which the Iranian crisis solution should go through a more extensive de-escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, including a cease-fire in Gaza.

Addressing the American nation from the White House after the strikes, American president Donald Trump said that the main Iranian nuclear installations had been completely destroyed. No independent damage assessment has been carried out.

So then?

It is unclear whether the United States will continue to attack Iran alongside its ally Israel, engaged in a war for nine days against Iran. Israel also remains in conflict with Hamas, an ally of the Iranian regime.

The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, supported in a publication on X that American attacks will have lasting consequences and that Tehran reserves all the options To retaliate.

L’Associated Press reported that Iran had drawn a new salvo from missiles in Israel in the hours that followed the American strikes, destroying residential buildings and houses in three cities and injuring at least 23 people.

In her own publication on social networks on Sunday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, reminded Canadians in the region to register for World Affairs Canada to receive information specific to each country, including the travel options offered.

Global Affairs Canada has said that even if Iranian airspace is closed due to the conflict, land border posts to Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan are possible for Canadians who are trying to leave Iran. Mr. Hairy has called on the government to protect Canadians from violence that spreads in our communities in the country and against Iran’s attempts to intimidate Canada’s Jewish and Persian communities.

No diplomatic relations

Canada has not called for a regime change in Iran, but it does not maintain diplomatic relations with this country. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper closed the Canada Embassy in Tehran in 2012.

Canada has enrolled the Iranian Revolutionary Guardian Corps on the list of terrorist organizations a year ago and has imposed sanctions on hundreds of people and entities in Iran for human rights violations and attempts to destabilize world peace.

In January, judge Marie-Josée Hogue wrote in her final report following the public inquiry into foreign interference that Iran has never been a important actor of foreign interference in Canadian democracy.

She wrote that Iran is based on transnational repression campaigns to prevent any criticism from his government.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service said in its 2024 annual report, published last week, that Iran is likely to use intermediaries to target enemies perceived and established in foreign countries, including Canada.

Iranian threat activities against Canada and its allies should continue in 2025 and could intensify according to the evolution of the situation in the Middle East and perceptions of threats from the Iranian regimecan we read in the report.
