“The AI unlearn us to think and we consider it to be progress”

Mike Kuketz

Declarations like these immediately capture our attention, especially when it comes to our capacities for reflection. Mike Kuketz, computer security researcher, has just published an alarming report on the impact our habits with the AI on our cognitive faculties. The famous German researcher criticizes AI, and more precisely generative artificial intelligence.

He warns against a phenomenon that is observed in all social strata and all age groups. But especially among young people:

“Before, we opened a book, or was common sense to answer certain questions. From now on, we rely by reflex to an AI. Not because it is necessary, but because it is more practical. ”

There is a sensitive point there. While in the past, it was at least necessary to master certain Google techniques to find what we wanted during a search on the web, today, Chatgpt and the others do all the work and bring us the answer on a silver set.

And that’s right that the problems start, underlines Kuketz.

But what is stuck?

Until recently, artificial intelligence was still a tool, practical help that assumed clearly defined tasks.

From now on, the IT security researcher notes that:

“We no longer consider reflection as an obvious activity, but as an option. An option which is increasingly saving. And this is precisely where the danger resides. Because if we stop thinking, we unlearn not only to solve problems, but also to ask questions, to weigh the pros and cons, to remember: in short, to being human in their intellectual depth. “

We thus reached a known phenomenon, such as the “Maslow hammer” or the “law of the instrument”. Said more simply: as we have been put the Hammer of AI in our hands, everything suddenly looks like a nail.

For Kuketz:

“IA now only assumes operational tasks, but also more and more cognitive decisions: what formulation is the best? What argument is hit in a conflict? ”

And where will it take us?

According to Kuketz, the consequences are quite dramatic:

“We do not only observe a sudden intellectual impoverishment, but an insidious and progressive disappearance of any personal judgment. Automated proposals are gradually replacing the ability to orient yourself on the intellectual and emotional level, so we barely exercise, and we transmit even less. ”

Kuketz quotes as an example known the marketing campaign of the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Samsung has marketed the Android smartphone with AI assistance as “the daily solution for small and big breakdowns”.

“The idea: no need to think for yourself if the AI does for you”

If we get used to entrusting “complex or even trivial decisions” at AI very early, we forget to take them ourselves, notes Kuketz. And this convenience has a price.

“We are grieving for details, we lose the sense of orientation, we get used to a world in which each uncertainty is immediately” resolved “from the outside.”

This decrease in the ability to solve a problem is to worry about. Especially in a country like ours, where direct democracy depends on critical and committed citizens.

You remember Wall-EPixar’s masterpiece? We see a dystopian future in which people no longer do anything apart moving on loungers. Is this our future everyone?

And you? What do you think?

What do you think of generative AI? Have you completely replaced Google by Chatgpt? Do you let this technology answer all your daily questions? Tell us everything.
