Chikungunya: 12 transmission homes identified in mainland France: News

In its latest weekly assessment published Wednesday July 16, Public Health France announces that it has identified 12 transmission homes and fears a transmission of the virus. Thirty cases are now identified.

“The number of transmission foci illustrates the significant risk of indigenous transmission of these viruses in hexagonal France”, this is the last public health warning France after the publication of its last report on the state of propagation of Chikungunya. According to the agency, twelve transmission homes have been identified for around thirty cases in total since the start of the epidemic. And according to Public Health France, this trend should increase. “The number of transmission foci illustrates the significant risk of indigenous transmission of these viruses in France,” reports the public health agency. “Other cases will probably be identified, including outside the usual transmission areas.”

According to Public Health France, the largest transmission home was observed in Salon-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône where “13 cases were identified, including two cases domiciled in the neighboring municipalities of Grans and Lambesc. This is the most extensive home at this stage” reports the agency. The South is particularly affected since a suspicion of cases has also been identified in the Drôme.

“A level of indigenous cases never seen before”

This viral disease, in the same way as dengue or zika virus, is transmitted to humans mainly by mosquito bites of the genus Aedes, also called tigers mosquitoes, according to the Pasteur Institute. This disease is manifested by the appearance of symptoms such as fever and intense joint pain. Earlier this summer, the Pasteur Institute had alerted to “a level of indigenous cases (a case diagnosed during a contamination directly on the territory of metropolitan France) never seen before”.
