Pirate a thermomix is much simpler than expected

When it comes to hacking, we generally think of bank cards, smartphones and computers. However, the devices that make your life in the kitchen easier are also convenience gateways for hackers. In a press release published a few days ago, the Synacktiv company, specializing in cybersecurity, announced that it has managed to hack a thermomix TM5. If the operation is more aware of the awareness of the malicious attack, it highlights the security problems that surround domestic robots.

The TM5 online in sight

The Thermomix TM5, like many other connected domestic devices, is no longer a simple kitchen utensil. Released in 2014, the device has become a real on -board computer, capable of cooking, cutting and programming meals of the week, via a bridge with its dedicated mobile application. An ideal target for cybercriminals, reports Synacktiv, which indicates that it has managed to divert certain robot functions without physically modifying it, by displaying personalized messages on the screen, controlling the heating temperature, and by triggering untimely error messages. On the larger scale, this flaw could lead to intrusions on the COOKIDOO mobile application, or to access to payment information via account settings.

The objective is not to point the finger at the Vorwerk brand, indicates the company, but rather to alert on a wider problem related to the safety of connected objects. If the TM5 is one of the best secure objects in its category, it is also one of the most popular. The slightest flaw could therefore have dramatic consequences. Synacktiv also indicates that Vorwerk was informed upstream of this experiment, and shows great responsiveness by authorizing the publication of the results. The company is working today to resolve existing flaws, and the optimization of

Wider issues

Today, several billion connected objects are circulating. The more these devices are integrated into our lives, the more their flaws can become entry points for computer attacks. The experience conducted on the thermomix TM5 calls for a Global change of IoT and domestic home. The safety of connected objects becomes more and more worrying, as they invest all aspects of our daily life. As these technologies multiply and gain in sophistication, protecting these devices becomes an essential requirement to guarantee the confidence and safety of users.
