Iga Swiatek et Carlos Alcaraz Won the Cincinnati tournament on Monday for the first time, the Spaniard taking advantage of the abandonment in the final of Jannik Sinner, sick during an aborted shock a few days before the US Open.
After the Roland-Garros final won by Alcaraz, and that of Wimbledon kidnapped by Sinner, the Masters 1000 from Cincinnati offered a new attractive duel between the two male tennis cadors, which was to raise the tension before the last Grand Chelem of the season, which begins on Sunday in New York.
But Sinner, sick, was forced to abandon when he was led 5-0 during the first set.
“I’m sorry guys, I can’t. I tried, but I can’t. I feel bad. I cannot move, I have the impression that I will collapse, “said the title holder at the supervisor after calling a doctor.

A state of health that questions
“I have been feeling bad since yesterday. I thought it would be better after night but it was worse. I tried, I am very disappointed for you and sorry, “he added to the stadium microphone during the ceremony.
“Take care of yourself, it is the most important,” said Alcaraz immediately to his great rival after his abandonment, still validating his ninth success against the Italian in 14 clashes.
Without fighting, the Spaniard has won his 22nd title on the circuit, the sixth this season, and the eighth in Masters 1000 since the start of his career. “I feel very confident. I like New York where I had won my first Grand Slam ”, in 2022, added Alcaraz.
He ended the series of 26 successes on Dure of Sinner on Monday, which had not lost on this surface since the final of the ATP 500 in Beijing last year, against Alcaraz already.
The abandonment of the Italian questions his form at the start of l’US Open (August 24-September 7), he who aims for a third big home title this year after the Australian Open in January and Wimbledon in July, all framing a three-month suspension for doping (February-May).
The US Open, the “main objective” of Sinner
Sinner did not appear at a press conference but transmitted to journalists a press release which assures that he will defend his title well to the US Open, his “main objective”, after a few days of “recovery”.
Enough to question his participation in the mixed double tournament which he must start Tuesday with the Czech Katerina Siniakova.
On Monday, during a programmed game at 3:00 p.m. locals (9:00 p.m. Swiss hours) under the Intense Sun of Ohio, Alcaraz succeeded in a white entrance break, faced with an awkward and little mobile sinner, letting the rest imagine.
Alcaraz will remain N.2 in the world in the next ATP ranking but with just under 2000 points behind Sinner.
