In The Hague, Mr. Zelensky joined other heads of state and government during a dinner with the King of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, and Wednesday, he met US President Donald Trump. In the final statement of the Summit, the NATO countries have however reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.
Defense: NATO agreement on the 5% GDP threshold
Bart de Wever is counting on the meeting this EU heads of state and government on Thursday to reiterate this support, at 26, knowing that Hungary by Viktor Orban was dissociated.
In addition, “the EU must ensure that Americans remain involved as much as possible for Ukraine, because the capacities they have simply cannot be replaced”.
The Prime Minister also counts on this summit to validate the principle of the 18th package of sanctions against Moscow, “to completely decade us from the fossil energy of Russia”. On this package, Hungary is not on board either, although it would not block it, according to Mr. de Wever. “It is an ad hoc situation which is perhaps viable, but which raises questions structurally,” he admits. He always says hoping that Budapest will not block the renewal of the sanctions already adopted either.
The Belgian government, cornered, is aligned with the future NATO standard of 5 % GDP in defense expenditure
