Discovery of traces of a human presence more than 1 million years old on an Indonesian island

Stone tools from Calio, in Sulawesi.

After the man of Florès, discovered on the eponymous island of Indonesia in 2003, and the human remains exhumed a few years later on the Philippine Island of Luçon, which also gave its name to one species, curiosity had postponed itself on another Indonesian island, Sulawesi (Celebes). This extent of land of several hundred thousand square kilometers had already delivered some prehistoric secrets, including tools aged at least 194,000 years. But not enough to compete with the remains of artifacts aged 1.02 million found on Florès, nor those found on Luçon about 700,000 years old.

« We have looked for evidence of the presence of the first humans in Sulawesi for many years, it is therefore a great relief to have finally found them », Enthuses Adam Brumm, archaeologist and co -author of the study published on August 6 in the journal Nature. With his colleagues from Australian and Indonesian universities, they dug in the sedimentary layers of the Calio site, working ten centimeters by ten centimeters. A conscientious method that has borne fruit, allowing to exhume seven tools cut in flint.
